The weld tool in Silhouette Studio is super useful for creating great projects. It is one of the tools I use the most and in this post I am going to tell you my three top tricks for using this tool with text and shapes. Just a quick heads up that this post contains affiliate links.

How to weld shapes together

Welding shapes together is a super cool way to create new designs in Silhouette Studio. If you have never used the weld tool before here is a quick run down of how easy it is to use!

  1. Select two or more shapes you would like to weld together.
  2. Make sure that all of the shapes overlap each other.
  3. Open the ‘modify panel’ and select the ‘weld tool’. Your letters will now join together into one shape!
  4. Cut out your new shape!

Using the weld tool to create cursive writing

This is one of the mistakes I see all the time. A lot of people don’t realise that you need to weld that text together to make it cut out as one shape. It is so simple to do. Here is a quick step by step!

  1. Zoom in on the text you want to make into one shape and check to make sure that all of the letters overlap. If they don’t find out what to do here!
  2. Select all of the letters that you want to make into one shape.
  3. Open the ‘modify panel’ and select the ‘weld tool’. Your letters will now join together into one shape!
  4. Cut out your word!

Now here is the pro tip. If you look at my image you will see that you can not see the bottom of my letters! You will also see that some letters are not sitting on the line properly. Luckily this is super easy to fix!

  1. Click on the text to select it.
  2. On the right hand side of the text you will see a link with a little box on it.
  3. Click and drag the box up and down to reposition your text.
  4. Select the text and the shape you want to weld it to.
  5. Open the ‘modify panel’ and select the ‘weld tool’. Your letters will now join together with the shape!
  6. Cut out your new personalised shape.
